Above: Ernie Els has long been admired for his syrupy rhythm.

The rhythm of your golf swing should be a reflection of your natural rhythm. We all have our own natural speed: the speed that we walk, work and go about our everyday life. Nick Price, for example, has a fast and brisk rhythm, and his swing reflects this. In comparison, Ernie Els’ rhythm is slow and methodical.

I use the Tour Tempo App, which allows me to feel the same speed on both my backswing and downswing. There are different ratios for backswing to downswing, so there will be one to suit your swing. For example, Tiger Woods’ tour tempo is 27/9, which is a 3:1 ratio. The app is available on your smartphone or iPad, and once you find your tempo your swing should become more consistent.
