Ian Poulter’s week started off on the wrong foot, with the Englishman having to pay off a $100 FA Cup bet to his good mate Lee Westwood, who captured the moment on video and posted it to social media. Unfortunately for Poults, that would not be the last time this week that he got roasted on camera.
Early in his first round of the DP World Tour’s 2022 season-opener, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Poulter was cooking, having made three birdies in his first four holes to reach three-under. At the fifth, after splitting the fairway with a 280-yard drive, Poulter and longtime caddie Terry Mundy began to discuss his upcoming 125-yard approach shot, specifically about where the pin was located on the green. “Thirty-three, three right you’ve got this pin, yeah?” Poulter says to Mundy, meaning the pin is 33 paces on the green and just three paces from the right edge.
“No, it wasn’t,” Mundy responds before dropping the hammer. “We’re you p—-d when you did the pins last night?”
Turns out, Poulter wasn’t drunk, just a little tired as he went on to admit. But you have to laugh. One look up at the green and you can very easily see that that pin is way more than just three paces off the right. The real question should have been: was Poulter drunk in the middle of this fairway?
We kid, we kid. He very clearly was not, as he went on to birdie this hole and the next. He wound up shooting a six-under 66, which has him just three shots off the lead of Scotland’s Scott Jameison. Maybe Poulter can get the last laugh after a rough few days of being laughed at.
