LIV Golf’s schedule for 2023 has been finalised, according to Sports Illustrated.
Much of the Saudi-backed circuit’s itinerary for its second year was previously reported by Australian Golf Digest, highlighted by the addition of a third property owned by Donald Trump – at the former President’s course in Washington, DC – to the 14-event LIV schedule. Trump sites in Bedminster, New Jersey and Miami hosted LIV events in 2022 and are returning this year.
LIV had already announced three tournament sites back in November: The El Camaleón Golf Course in Mexico – which had been a PGA Tour host since 2007, with the World Wide Technology Championship (formerly the Mayakoba Golf Classic) played there earlier this tour season – Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore and Real Club Valderrama in Spain. LIV had also previously announced that the Grange Golf Club in Australia would be on its calendar.
As Australian Golf Digest had previously reported, two other former PGA Tour sites were added to the 2023 schedule in the Gallery at Dove Mountain outside of Tucson and the Greenbrier’s Old White course in West Virginia.
The Gallery was the host to the WGC-Match Play in 2008 and 2009, won by Tiger Woods and LIV member Henrik Stenson. The WGC-Match Play remained in the Dove Mountain community for six more seasons before moving in 2015.
The Greenbrier Classic was a PGA Tour event from 2010 to 2019, with Xander Schauffele and Angel Cabrera among the notables on its winners’ roll call. Current LIV Golf member Joaquin Niemann was the event’s final winner. In 2020, the Greenbrier and PGA Tour elected to cancel the final seven remaining years of the tournament contract, which was previously planned to run through 2026.
Sources told Golf Digest that Greenbrier tournament officials were not happy with the event’s move from its July 4 date to the American fall. The property has served as host to the Ryder and Solheim Cups, and the resort was famous for its underground declassified bunker, which was supposed to serve as home to Congress during a nuclear attack.
Other new additions to the LIV schedule include Orange County National in Orlando and Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is technically new, and will serve as the season finale in 2023, although the club also hosts the Saudi International, a former European Tour and current Asian Tour event that is filled with LIV Golf members.
One notable surprise is the elimination of last year’s Boston tournament, which sources tell Golf Digest was one of the most attended stops of LIV’s inaugural year. The full LIV Golf schedule is listed below.
Both individual and team competitions similar to the inaugural season will return to LIV Golf in 2023. Last week the league announced a multi-year media deal with the CW, giving LIV Golf its first traditional television broadcast partner in the United States. An announcement on its Australian broadcast partner is expected soon.
