So, about the golf. LIV Golf has been about anything but the competition on the course lately, with the status of the league being up in the air for the past few months. On Wednesday, CEO Scott O’Neil said that they have a lead investor willing to fork out millions to keep the league going into next year. Many questions remain, of course, including whether the team championship will be held later this year in Michigan.
For now, however, they’re at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, with the usual cast of characters playing for the customary $30 million purse, with $4 million going to the individual winner and the winning team splitting $3 million.
This marks only the second tournament in the U.S. this year and Bedminster has hosted an event in both 2022 and 2023. Jon Rahm is closing in on his third consecutive individual championship, with Bryson DeChambeau the only other pursuer who has a (slim) chance. Rahm tied for 23rd in the UK in his last finish, which was his worst finish since he joined LIV Golf.
Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces hold a slight lead over Cameron Smith’s Ripper squad. That team title is going to clearly come down to the wire, with the event in Indianapolis being the only remaining individual event on the schedule.
Check back here Sunday after play is complete for updates.
