Slow week in Mexico for LIV Golf? Anything but.
Headlines surrounded whether the tour would continue: this week, next week, until the end of the year? Everything was up in the air. Reports were that Saudi Arabia’s PIF said that it will not fund the league after shifting priorities. Then LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil sent an email to players saying that reports were false and that “our season continues exactly as planned.”
Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Usually. So maybe the truth is somewhere between.
At any rate, the league is in Mexico City where the 57 players and 13 teams are at Chapultepec Golf Club playing for the $30 million purse with the winning individual taking home $4 million and the winning team splitting $3 million. Joaquin Niemann is the defending champion.

This is the second year in Mexico City and fourth overall in Mexico with the league visiting its sixth country in its first six events. The last event was nearly a month ago in South Africa as they took a break with the Masters last week.
Bryson DeChambeau has won each of the last two events, in Singapore and South Africa. But he’s still only second in the season standings and Jon Rahm is the leader, with one victory, three second-place finishes and a fifth-place finish. Those two, as they have been the past few years, continue to be the two biggest names in the league and its two best players, although DeChambeau missed the cut at Augusta National and Rahm tied for 38th place. Tyrrell Hatton was the highest finisher at the Masters with a third-place tie via a Sunday 66.
Meanwhile, Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz are two Mexican players thrilled to be playing in their homeland. They’re now teammates on LIV’s only Latin American team, Torque GC. Niemann is the captain and Sebastian Munoz is the fourth player.
Check back here Sunday after play is complete for updates.
