While there are clear health benefits in playing golf, there are also significant risks in playing it – or any sport that requires you to be outdoors for prolonged hours, exposed to the elements. Practicing proper sun protection is essential to safeguard your skin and health while enjoying the game.
Overexposure to harmful UV radiation causes 95 percent of melanomas, making skin cancer almost entirely preventable.
To help with prevention, Cancer Council recommends that sunscreen should be applied liberally and evenly to clean and dry skin 20 minutes before exposure to UV.
Adults should apply approximately one teaspoon for each arm, leg, body front, body back and face (including neck and ears), which equates to about seven teaspoons or 35 millilitres for a full-body application. Cancer Council also recommends sunscreen be used in combination with the other forms of sun protection: protective clothing, sunglasses, a broad brimmed hat and shade.
