Sitting in the interview room of the plush new media centre of the Masters, watching two of the greatest golfers of all time reminisce about their playing days with Arnold Palmer, is the most enjoyable history lesson I’ve ever experienced.

The camaraderie between Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and the late Palmer still feels unbreakable even without The King with no longer around.

Of all the tales told by the duo with nine Masters between them at a Thursday press conference at Augusta National, this ultimate sledge from Nicklaus to Player was the highlight. Enjoy:

JACK NICKLAUS:  “We (Player, Nicklaus and Palmer) had a lot of laughter, a lot of fun.”

GARY PLAYER: “It’s interesting, I met an Indian gentleman in India ‑‑ it’s strange you should ask that question.  And he was a gerontologist.  He said the greatest medicine is from God and it’s free, laughter.  He said when you laugh, it washes the soul.  And this is what we did.  Honestly, we laughed and teased each other.

“And I still tease Jack today.  The other night he was saying, ‘Well, what do you think it takes to be classified as a superstar in golf?’  Because everybody uses the word superstar and great in all sports, and they are not.

“So I said, ‘Well, I suppose, to be a superstar, you’ve got to win six majors.’

“So Jack says, and he knows I’ve won nine (majors), I think you’ve got to win 10.  (Laughter).”
