The golf community is rallying around the family of Greg Longmore, one of Tasmania’s best amateur players, who was badly burned in a distillery fire earlier this week.

Longmore, a fixture in Tasmanian teams at Interstate Series and a state captain, suffered severe burns to his face, hands and legs in the fire at his place of employment, the Adams Distillery in the town of Perth, outside Launceston. He was mixing ingredients to make gin at the time the fire broke out.

Longmore is in a critical condition in hospital and, according to the ABC, his sister Samantha Walmsley has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support his family through GoFundMe. It has raised nearly $37,000.

He has a wife, Erin, and two young daughters.

“As they are a young family, keeping Greg’s girls looked after will ease the stresses allowing [wife] Erin to focus on being there for Greg to come home,” the appeal says.

Longmore had only started working at the business full-time three weeks ago. Just last Saturday he equalled the course record at Launceston Golf Club with a round of seven-under 65 in the monthly medal.
