Longtime club professional Jason Caron continues to live out a dream on behalf of many club pros, by continuing to succeed in tournament golf, this time by nearly winning the PGA Tour Champions Cologuard Classic on Sunday.

The head professional at Mill River Club in Oyster Bay, N.Y., Caron birdied the final three holes at La Paloma Country Club in Tucson, Ariz., putting him into a playoff with Steven Alker, who won with a birdie on the first extra hole.

Caron, 52, last played full-time professional golf in 2003, having played mostly on what now is known as the Korn Ferry Tour, before opting for the security of a club job.

But last year, Caron finished in a tie for fourth at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which rewarded him with more PGA Tour Champions starts. In all, he played eight senior events and finished in the top four in three of them. He earned enough money to finish in the top 36 on the money list to have earned a tour card for the 2025 season.

He completed 54 holes in 12 under par in the Cologuard Classic, enough to get him into a playoff with Alker, who birdied three of the last four holes.

Alker holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to record his ninth PGA Tour Champions victory.
