Davis Love III underwent successful open-heart surgery late last week, according to CBS golf anchor Jim Nantz, who delivered the news on the air during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Nantz said he spoke to 60-year-old Love just before he went on the air to call the final round at Torrey Pines. He said Love was released on Saturday from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, after surgery for what he termed was a leaky valve that was diagnosed 10 years ago and was scheduled well in advance.

Love told Nantz, “I went in healthy and I came out healthier.” The 21-time PGA Tour winner said he’d be driving by March and playing golf in April.

Much of Love’s visibility in recent years has been as he served as the US captain for the Ryder Cup in 2012 and 2016 and in the Presidents Cup in 2022. The winner of the 1997 PGA Championship, Love has played sparingly on PGA Tour Champions over the 10 years he’s been eligible for the senior circuit. He’s made 52 total starts, with only four in the past two seasons, and has no wins and two top-five finishes.
