The hidden inner-city gem on the Yarra River is quietly becoming one of Melbourne’s most compelling membership propositions.

Occupying a secluded pocket of land on the edge of the Yarra River in Alphington, Latrobe Golf Club has spent the past several years turning adversity into ambition and the results are hard to ignore.

The jewel in the club’s crown is The Island, a five-hole, par-3 short course designed by Ogilvy Cocking Mead and nestled in a quiet corner of the property. With Pure Distinction greens, the same elite surface found across Melbourne’s famed Sandbelt, The Island punches well above its weight. Regular competitions make it an ideal pathway for beginners chasing their first handicap, while the quick, less-than-an-hour format has made it a genuine asset for the club’s growing corporate market.

That beginner-friendly approach runs through everything Latrobe does. More than 300 women have come through the club’s beginner programs during the past five years, a figure that reflects something real rather than a marketing talking point.

The bricks and mortar side of things has kept pace, too. New bathrooms, on-course paths and a new irrigation system have already been delivered, with a dedicated Island carpark and access road rounding out recent works.

Full memberships are available in five and six-day categories, while a seven-day short-course membership offers a more accessible entry point via The Island.
