A spectacular up-and-down for birdie from a tree root at the final hole of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am gave Cam Davis his best result of the season so far, while fellow Australian Jason Day set social media alight once again with a final-round outfit some said resembled a tracksuit.

Rory McIlroy lit up the back nine with a final-round 66 that gave him a 21-under-par total and a two-shot win at the iconic Monterey Peninsula tournament over close mate Shane Lowry (68, 19-under). McIlroy won his 27th PGA Tour title and climbed to 21st on the career victory list. It sets up an exciting build-up to April’s Masters, where four-time major winner McIlroy has a chance to complete the career grand slam with a green jacket victory at Augusta National – the final major he needs.

On Sunday (Monday AEDT), 29-year-old Davis (69) had to play his third shot from the roots of a tree beside the famous par-5 18th green and produced a magical pitch from 29 metres to steal a birdie and at 17-under he finished T-5, four behind McIlroy.

It was the first top-10 of the PGA Tour season from the Sydneysider who bagged a second career win on tour last year at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Davis was projected on Monday to jump eight places up the world rankings to No.44 courtesy of the top-five result at the $US20 million ($A32 million) Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Meanwhile, Day was the next best of the Australians with a T-13 at 12-under. But it was Day’s outfit that drew the most attention. His Malbon matching pants and sweater drew the ire of social media.

Rounding out the Australian contingent at the Signature event at Pebble Beach, Min Woo Lee was T-17 at 11-under while Adam Scott was T-22 at 10-under.

Scott was near the bottom of the leaderboard after an opening round of 74, rallied home with an eight-under 64 on Sunday.
