Australian Golf Digest’s 2016 Amateur Player of the Year Curtis Luck outplayed his more accomplished rivals to take a share of the lead in the Emirates Australian Open today at Royal Sydney.

Amidst the hype of a US amateur title victory and the Asian amateur championship, 20-year-old Luck was nerveless, carding a five-under par 67 to begin the nation’s most prestigious title.

In perfect conditions, he beat world No. 5 Jordan Spieth (69) by two shots and 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy  (70) by three on the day.

See what he and Jordan Spieth said about their opening rounds here:

The young man from Perth is tied for the lead with another young player, Victorian Lucas Herbert.

World No 7 Adam Scott is on the course and 1-over through 17 holes, drawing a big gallery at the Rose Bay course.
