Stronger iron lofts can be controversial, but loft alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Changes to centre of gravity, launch and ball speed all play a role in modern iron design.
Iron lofts have changed considerably over the past 10 to 15 years, but the number stamped on the spec sheet doesn’t tell the whole story.
The PING i540 is designed as a player’s distance iron with stronger lofts, but its centre of gravity is also lower, with more mass moved into the sole and below the golf ball.
This helps the club launch the ball higher while also capturing the increased ball speed sought from this category of iron.
Rather than focusing solely on loft, golfers should consider the resulting ball flight and how consistently the iron produces that flight for their game.
