We’ve reported on countless stories over the years about airlines losing or breaking pro’s clubs enroute to a tournament. Usually that leaves the golfer in question scrambling to acclimate to a new set on short notice, but on Friday at Crans-sur-Sierre, Rafa Cabrera-Bello actually credited his lost clubs for his T-4 start at the Omega European Masters.

Talk about a script flip, but we guess when you’re playing with Adam Scott’s irons, that suave swing is bound to rub off.
“If I tell you, you’re gonna laugh,” Cabrera-Bello said when asked about the reason for his strong play this week. “The big difference is that my clubs did not arrive this week. I’ve been playing with a mixture of a member’s bag and Adam Scott’s irons, so I guess there’s muscle memory, brain memory and now iron memory, because yesterday I was second in shots gained: approach, so that’s probably thanks to Adam Scott.”
Cabrera-Bello now faces a dilemma heading into the weekend. His clubs arrived following his second round on Friday, so he’ll have to decide whether he rides with the hot sticks or returns to his usual tools of the trade.
“Now I have a big dilemma—I really don’t know what to do” he continued. “I’ll probably play with mine tomorrow, but it’s been funny playing with Adam’s [clubs]. It made me want to go back to blades again. Who knows!”
Who knows, indeed. If that doesn’t sum up golf, whether an average Joe or a globetrotting pro, we don’t know what does.
