When you think about mallet putters, odds are your first thoughts lean toward more industrial terms like stability and alignment and even ball speed normalization. OK, maybe that last one is just us golf tech nerds, but what we can surely surmise is that squishy things like feel and softness are lower on the ladder of importance when you’re trying to breathe life into your dying game on the greens. If I can get something to drop my number of putts per round into the low 30s, I don’t care what it looks like, let alone what it feels like.
But maybe that’s just because mallets used to be clunky and clanky. Not anymore. Whether it’s milled steel or aluminum or faces that feature polymer inserts, the best mallets on the 2026 Hot List provide an ideal combination of the right sensory experience for optimal control of your putting stroke, while still providing the effective energy transfer that leads to smoother roll.
What’s interesting in trying to understand feel is the relationship between center of gravity and the golfer’s ability to sense the putter head’s position in space. That head and face angle awareness is really the foundation for ideal feel and control, and it’s especially relevant in the current movement toward so-called “low-“ or “zero-torque” putter designs. These designs tend to position the head’s center of gravity more in line with the shaft axis, which means it’s often well-forward of traditional mallet putter designs. Generally, a more forward CG can feel firmer, but modern designs use different materials to make that feeling less harsh and indeed, the feeling of the head and shaft moving more in a more unified way might breed the solid, resilient feeling that many players have come to prefer. Interestingly, our softest feeling mallet putters all have inserts, but one features a stainless steel insert and the others feature inserts that use selectively urethanes similar to golf ball cover material or shock absorption polymers developed for running shoes.
Of course, that solid feeling at impact also can be a result of a deeper CG, which stabilizes the head on off-center hits for a higher moment of inertia. While the CG can get relatively well back of the face, the stability means impacts all over the face will respond more like center hits. That consistency also breeds a feel that many players find more reliable, and in that consistency often comes a sensation of softness.
That’s why during Hot List testing, we use our Vector Ratings to understand an array of performance metrics, not only in a good/bad range but in a non-value judgment, more descriptive way. Specifically in putters, the Hot List Vector rating for Sensory runs on a scale from “1” being the softest to “5” being the firmest. For guidance, we instruct our players when testing putters to think of “1” as “cushioned, not springy, like a couch cushion that gives a bit more than you expected” to a “5,” which is ‘firm, like a meat tenderizer hammering away on a flank steak atop a carving board made of hornbeam.”
It’s worth noting that our list of the softest-feeling putters does not include any putters with an average score lower than 2.25. In other words, in our players minds, getting too soft is not going to be ideal for any putter that should make the Hot List. And certainly several of our top putters in the Hot List criterion of Performance had a Sensory vector rating of 2.75 or higher. Nevertheless, think of these best soft mallets as displaying the right kind of “soft.”
