There are a lot of ways to praise the field at this week’s Genesis Invitational. Every player among the top 30 players of the latest FedEx Cup standings is competing at Riviera Country Club outside of Los Angeles, as are 23 of the top 25 in the world led by new world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and the man his took the label from, Rory McIlroy.

But when it comes down to it, the No. 1 thing to know about the field in this latest PGA Tour designated event is that Tiger Woods will be teeing it up his first non-major event since October 2020.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner surprised some by announcing last Friday on social media that he was ready to again. He last teed it up at an official PGA Tour event at The Open Championship last July. Woods has been battling plantar fasciitis, which forced him to miss the Hero World Challenge. His only other recent on-course appearances have come at The Match (losing with McIlroy to Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas) and at the PNC Championship (with his son Charlie).

California golfers Collin Morikawa—coming off a second-place finish at Riviera a year ago—and 2021 Genesis winner Max Homa will be looking to win the local event. Also in the field is Marcus Byrd, making just his second career PGA Tour start after receiving the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption given to a golfer of colour.

The winner will receive 550 FedEx Cup points and a $US3.6 million share of the $20 million purse.
