Technically, there are still a couple days of summer left, but for the most part, the best season to play golf is over. OK, so that’s just my opinion from a recent Golf Digest debate. But when it comes to when you can play the most, there’s no debate that summer is the answer. It’s science.
So, hopefully, you had a nice summer of racking up rounds played. If you live in the Northeast like me, it’s the equivalent of squirrels gathering nuts for the winter. The more you play, the more you can live off those rounds during those dark days of December and beyond.

Anyway, the USGA released on Thursday the most scores posted by both a male and a female this summer (It seems golf’s governing body shifted the season a bit on its calendar). And the eye-popping numbers are sure to make you jealous. Have a look:

That’s right, one male golfer posted 294 (!) rounds of golf. Not in one year, but in one season. Insane stuff.
And one female golfer played 108 rounds during the season. Which might make even more golfers jealous because averaging a little over one round per day seems more reasonable. Regardless, must be nice.
Back to the 294, though, how is that even possible?! Over a 90-day period, that’s more than three rounds per day!
But, thanks to golf nuts like Barry Gibbons and Nolan Krentz, we know stuff like this is possible. Gibbons, who I had the pleasure of playing with in 2016, averaged 3.4 rounds per day for an entire year in 2022, finishing with a staggering 1,235 rounds played. (He was shooting for a cooler-looking 1,234 total, but couldn’t help himself the final day of the year and played one more.) Actually, there’s a good chance the mystery golfer is one of those two golf nuts.
Anyway, for the rest of us, it’s a reminder that we’re not playing enough golf because you can never play enough golf. And now we have something to shoot for. Next summer.
