Track pants are everywhere. The versatile, sporty bottoms have taken on different forms this year. We’re not talking about the velour track pants of the 1970’s, nor the crinkle-nylon, windbreaker track pants of the 1990’s. Track pants are sophisticated now. They’re being worn in the office. So it begs the question: Can we wear them on the golf course? Many stern golf course dress codes list track pants as inappropriate attire. But perhaps track pants have transformed enough to be allowed on golf courses.
I asked the queen of golf fashion, Ina Kim-Schaad, if she thinks the current trend has a place on the golf course.
“I think there’s a nice way to wear track pants, especially more polished ones that don’t have an elasticated waistband,” Kim-Schaad says. “I feel like some of them are definitely like tailored and polished enough that you could get away with it and could look really great.”
Kim-Schaad says that the most important thing to consider is if track pants are authentic to your style. She advises against following a trend just for the sake of following a trend.
“If you’re sporty and want to try a track pant, if you feel like this makes your personality shine, I say totally go for it,” Kim-Schaad says. “Conversely, if it feels like it’s a stretch, then it probably is a stretch. Wear what you feel comfortable in and don’t chase trends. You can tell when someone isn’t quite sure about what they’re wearing, and that’s what I would caution against.”
