It took Austin Smotherman 100 PGA Tour starts to earn his first victory at the Bank of Utah Championship earlier this month. His second tour title came in start 101 at the Bermuda Butterfield Championship, with the 32-year-old capturing the weather-shortened 54-hole event on Monday in a playoff against Seamus Power.

Strong winds caused the cancellation of the final round, leading to a Monday finish that looked more like a par-3 contest than overtime on the PGA Tour. The pair played the scenic par-3 16th at Port Royal Golf Course three times before Smotherman – who hit the green every time – won with a par.

Smotherman, who ranked 10th in strokes gained/approach the green for the week, uses Titleist T100 irons with KBS Tour 125 S+ shafts. In the playoff he hit a pair of 7-irons before switching to an 8-iron when the pin was moved up after the pair remained knotted after two playings of the hole.

As for playing the par 3 to decide things, Smotherman said on Sunday he had no issue with it. “That’s probably one of the iconic, cool playoff spots I can only imagine,” he said. “I think the winds are swirling around… But iconic hole, just a really, really cool spot to cap off a week.”

Two wins in two starts is indeed a pretty cool way to cap off the week.
