Normally, the PGA Tour would be beginning the New Year this week with its beloved Sentry tournament, at the Plantation Course at Kapalua on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
But due to a dispute over irrigation, Kapalua’s Plantation course was deemed unfit by the PGA Tour to host the event.
In the absence of fans getting to watch on TV the breathtaking views from Kapalua across the Pacific Ocean to the Molokai mountains, and the world’s best players attacking the delightful Coore-Crenshaw design, let’s rewind four years to 2022. Australia’s own Cameron Smith, then a PGA Tour player, won with a record-setting 34-under-par total. He defeated Jon Rahm by one shot.
It kicked off Smith’s breakthrough season, in which he went on to win the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, a maiden major at the Open Championship at St Andrews, as well as a LIV Golf event and the Australian PGA.
