Is it a coincidence that the very next PGA Tour round following Scottie Scheffler’s wild TIO (Temporary Immovable Obstruction) ruling featured an actual TIO bit back? Probably.
After all, if the golf gods were that mad about the situation, then they would have gone after Scheffler on Thursday. Instead, the World No. 1 shot a ho-hum 65 to start the 3M Open. But another tour pro got a brutal break—and startled a pair of Golf Channel analysts in the process.

That would be Casey Jarvis, who had 229 yards to the hole for his second on the par-5 18th at TPC Twin Cities during his opening round and decided to take the water out of play by going long. WAY long. So long in fact that he flew the grandstand—a structure that Scheffler had gotten a controversial free drop from at Royal Birkdale four days earlier—and plunked a TV tower.
So, what’s the problem? We see tour pros go “grandstanding” all the time to the disgust of Golf Twitter. Well, this time, it backfired as Jarvis’ golf ball backed all the way off the green and into the water. Have a look at the wild scene:

That’s a tough one. After dropping short of the green, Jarvis failed to get up and down, so he fell back to even par with a closing bogey.
On the bright side, Steve Sands and Jim Gallagher Jr.—not to mention all the fans sitting behind the 18th green—made it out OK. But it should definitely serve as a warning to golfers looking to bail out there the rest of the week.
