From the vault: When Matt Jones plucked a last-gasp Masters invite

He’s drifted out to No.184 in the world ranking but 2015 Australian Open champion Matt Jones still owns one of the best moments in Shell Houston Open history courtesy of his finish to the 2014 tournament.

The tour stop that these days sits right before the Masters offers the final opportunity to enter the field for the year’s first major – and only to the winner. So win is what Jones did. The Sydneysider faced namesake Matt Kuchar in a rain-soaked playoff in Houston three years ago and missed the green short and right on the 18th in the first hole of sudden death.

It was no problem for this Jones boy, who promptly did this:

The victory led to a fast-dash Masters berth, still his only one (he would miss the cut at Augusta), and it remains his lone US PGA Tour title. Could he catch lightning in a bottle twice? Jones is in the Houston Open field this week for just his fourth start of 2017.
