For those looking to get in one more test run before the Masters (or a final chance to sneak into the field at Augusta National), might we suggest the Valero Texas Open? This week’s PGA Tour event is the final call before the festivities begin in Georgia for the year’s first major, and nine of the top 20 pros in the world rankings will make their way to TPC San Antonio.
World No. 4 Tommy Fleetwood leads the field, along with recent PGA Tour victor Gary Woodland, former Valero Texas Open winner J.J. Spaun and defending champ Brian Harman. Despite closing three-over 75, Harman held on (literally) at TPC San Antonio on a windy and brutal day, to top Ryan Gerard by three strokes.

TPC San Antonio’s Oaks course has hosted the Valero Texas Open since 2010. Playing through the dry outlands north of the city, the Greg Norman design is one of the most strategically compelling courses on tour with aggressive bunkering, some wonderful short par 4s and several uniquely demanding par 5s, including the 18th, one of the most underrated and frustrating closing holes the professionals play.

Over the last six editons of the event, three players won the Valero Texas Open to get a last-second bid into the Masters: Akshay Bhatia (2024), J.J. Spaun (2022) and Corey Conners (2019). We’ll find out soon if another pro can follow in their footsteps and book a late flight to Georgia.
This week’s winner will receive a $1.764 million cut of the $9.8 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points.
