Rory McIlroy – specifically, his driver – has been one of the big storylines entering this week’s US Open. After bouncing between TaylorMade models early in the season, the PGA Tour star settled on the Qi10 and won the Masters to complete the career Grand Slam. There’s no doubt McIlroy would have kept that one in the bag for a long time, but as everyone found out, it failed a test ahead of the PGA Championship.

That has sent McIlroy into a bit of a tailspin. He finished T-47 that week at Quail Hollow and then, using a Qi35, missed the cut by 10 shots last week in Canada. One of our gambling experts went as far as to call Rory “unbettable” this week!

But after switing back to a Qi10 this week at Oakmont, McIlroy is back to driving it great once again. And nothing showcased that more than the tee shot he smoked on his third hole of the tournament.

Playing the back nine first, McIlroy hit one so far on the par-5 12th that his ball nearly reached a busy crosswalk that no one thought could be reached. Have a look for yourself at this 392-yard(!) bomb:

Yeah, that driver seems to be a keeper. That’s actually McIlroy’s longest drive of the season.

More importantly, McIlroy hit a great approach shot and two-putted to grab an early (early) share of the lead at Oakmont.
