The 2025 U.S. Open will be held at a familiar locale for fans of the championship as the USGA brings its marquee event once more to Oakmont Country Club just outside of Pittsburgh. This will be the 10th time that the famed Henry Fownes design will host the national championship, more than any other venue, with the USGA committed to three more visits between 2033 and 2049 after designating Oakmont a U.S. Open anchor site.

The 125th U.S. Open will take place June 12-15, 2025. Any player with a Handicap Index of 0.4 or lower, and any professional, can apply to play in the championship, with entries accepted at champs.usga.org until April 9 at 5 p.m. EDT. The USGA will be looking to see if for the fourth time in U.S. Open history more than 10,000 people apply to compete.

The USGA has established exemption categories for players who are exempt from qualifying for the event, with a little less than half the 154-player field expected to earn their way directly to the championship. The remaining spots in the field will be filled by golfers who play their way into the championship via local and final qualifying.

There are 110 courses hosting 18-hole local qualifiers that will be contested in 43 states, Canada and Mexico from April 16 to May 19. Those who advance then tee it up in one of 13 36-hole sectional qualifiers. Nine will be conducted at U.S. sites on Monday, June 2, with one additionally American qualifier being played Monday, May 19. Japan and England also will host final qualifiers on May 19, with one other final qualifier being played in Canada on June 2.

“It is of great importance that thousands of professional and amateur golfers with diverse backgrounds will once again have an opportunity to compete for a place in this year’s U.S. Open and ultimately play in our national championship,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “Allied Golf Associations in the United States, Tours in Europe, Canada and Japan, and National Federations will collaborate in providing a path to the championship through both qualifying stages to historic Oakmont Country Club where the world’s greatest golfers will compete.”

Once tens of thousands of trees (mostly planted in the 1960s) were removed between the early 90s and 2015, Oakmont’s original penal design was re-established, with the game’s nastiest, most notorious bunkers (founder-architect H.C. Fownes staked out bunkers whenever and where ever he saw a player hit an offline shot), deep drainage ditches and ankle-deep rough. Oakmont also has the game’s swiftest putting surfaces, which were showcased during the U.S. Open in 2016, despite early rains that slowed them down a bit. Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner made bunker modifications and expanded the greens throughout the course in 2023 in preparation for the 2025 U.S. Open. The USGA has already awarded Oakmont three additional Opens between 2033 and 2049, reinforcing its title as it the Host of the Most U.S. Opens ever. View Course
