Let me start by saying if you cover sports for a living, you’ve asked an athlete a dumb question before. So the purpose of this post isn’t to embarrass anyone. We’ve all been there. Well, maybe not to this point, but it happens.
OK, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, this might be the dumbest question ever asked of an athlete. After a tough second round at Torrey Pines that left him one outside the cut line, Cameron Smith did a quick interview. Emphasis on “quick,” because it ended rather abruptly after the question in question.
By the way, Kudos to Smith and his mullet for even doing media on his way out after a frustrating couple days. He answered the first question about the course like a pro. Then this exchange happened.
REPORTER: Anything you’re looking forward to the rest of the weekend?
SMITH: I missed the cut, so I’m going home.
And . . . scene. That was all for the Q&A. Yikes.
Obviously, the reporter didn’t realise Smith had missed the cut. OR maybe he/she did realise that and was just interested in the Aussie’s plans in San Diego now that he has some free time. Paragliding off the cliffs of Torrey Pines, perhaps? Maybe a trip to the San Diego Zoo? And don’t forget about LEGOLAND!
Either way, bad job. That was awkward.
