The world most people use to describe Tyrrell Hatton is “fiery”. He hates every golf course with a verve usually reserved for toxic exes. He treats his clubs like a 13-year-old treats their PlayStation controller. He even rips himself from time to time, if you can believe it. Many purists don’t care for his decorum (or lack thereof) on the golf course, but most of the time he stops just short of “the line”.

Not this week, though.

Hatton’s attitude has gone from angsty to downright unhinged over the course of his opening two rounds of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. During the first round, Hatton dropped a clear-as-day f-bomb after missing the green on the par-3 17th, rendering the normally verbose commentator Scott Van Pelt speechless. The evening hours didn’t do much to lift Hatton’s sprits, and he took to the course even more agitated on day two, eventually culminating in one of the single most vicious golf outbursts in recent memory. Please be warned, the following language is not appropriate for work, church, children or, heck, even some adults.

“Needless to say, Tyrrell Hatton is not happy with that tee shot.”

Uh, you think?? The guy just got into a 3am bar fight with his driver during a major championship broadcast, calling it a “piece of s–t c–t” while all but spitting in its face. We’ve seen more explosive blow-ups over the years – Sergio Garcia’s bunker tantrum springs to mind – but few as malicious as Hatton’s. At times, this man truly seems to HATE the game of golf.

That may seem ironic, or perhaps ungrateful, to those of us not making tens of millions to play a hobby sport for a living, but as we all know, our moods on the course are about far more than golf. Try as we might to escape, we often carry all the things from off the course onto it and that can produce some dark moments. Hatton seems to be having a few too many of those of late, and his latest outburst crosses a line he has toed for so long. So here’s hoping he finds some peace on the course. Otherwise, he should just stay off it, because whatever this is, it’s not working.
