With courses like Cape Kidnappers and Kauri Cliffs, both among the world’s top 50, golf in New Zealand already has a reputation for awe-inspiring scenery. But this par 3 in Queenstown takes it to another level. Known as Over the Top Golf, it features four tee boxes (from 150 to 285 metres) and commanding views over Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu from an altitude of more than 4,500 feet (1,370m). The only way to get there is by helicopter, which accounts for its steep price (about $A470 per player). Some 640 golfers have played the hole since it opened, each getting five shots at the green. There have been a few birdies, but marketing manager Shannon Walker doesn’t know how many. Most players don’t fill out their scorecards, he explains. “Too busy looking at the view.”
