Yet even as those in golf applaud Woodlands’ durability, the club is intent on bettering all aspects of the site. Management refers to it as the “1 percent stuff”, which is accurate, however the long-term impact will likely be far greater. For instance, the appointment of consulting architects Mike Clayton and Harley Kruse will yield improved biodiversity under a considered vegetation maintenance program that’s already bringing results. Clearing undertaken at ground level has revealed more of the region’s iconic low-lying indigenous vegetation.
Kruse is fond of saying that golf clubs in the 21st century need to care for everything inside their fencelines, not just the in-play areas that golfers see. The steps Woodlands is taking is evidence of this mindset at work.
Meanwhile, revitalised practice facilities – including a new short-game practice area – and a rejuvenated first tee/10th tee precinct nestled in a serene setting provides that immediate sense of welcome Woodlands is known for. They say you only get one shot at a first impression and Woodlands certainly makes it an unforgettable one.
