Located hard against the shores of the Indian Ocean south of Perth, The Cut is a modern seaside golf course with old-style charm. The course’s name stems from a channel deliberately cut into the coastline that allowed a flushing of the nearby Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary to rid both of algal blooms. This channel gave rise to an outdoor water-sports haven as well as a premium golf course.

Course architect James Wilcher blended the necessity of a housing development with the magnificence of an oceanside setting to create some of the most dramatic holes unearthed in Australia this century. Several of The Cut’s opening holes are utterly majestic as they weave between the coastal dunes, while the routing loses little momentum as it works away from the coast or through the residential precinct late on the front nine. A highlight of the back nine is the demanding 12th hole, a long par 4 that begins and ends atop two different dunes and in between plummets into a scrub-lined valley that is no bargain to navigate with safety.
