Tasmania Golf Club might be blessed with one of the best holes in the state but it is far from being a one-trick pony. The iconic third – a dogleg-left par 5 that bends 90 degrees as it wraps around Barilla Bay – is the hole the club in Hobart’s east is best known for. It offers a tantalising and daring line from the tee for big hitters or a more manageable path for the timid.

Realistically, however, there are several other holes and shots across the Al Howard design worth savouring. The short 11th, which drops steeply downhill from tee to green with the bay as a backdrop, widens many a golfer’s eye. A few holes earlier, the eighth is another par 3 that commands attention with a canted green benched into a hillside.

In fact, the entire excursion around Tasmania Golf Club gets the juices flowing. So there’s no need to feel crestfallen once you reach the fourth tee – there are plenty more thrills in store.
