No player has gained more shots on his competitors in the Strokes Gained era since Tiger Woods, but in many ways the best way to appreciate Scottie Scheffler’s recent run of form is by beholding the more basic stats.
So why did this become a thing? Was it a nod to Tiger’s alma mater, Stanford University? Is it simply his favourite colour? Is Mars his favourite planet? Actually, the answer is none of the above.
To give you an idea of just how good Woods was that year, there hasn’t been a player on the PGA Tour who has hit greens at that high a percentage in the past decade.
