New Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion Bernat Escuder joins a historic list of Spanish winners at Augusta National, which includes Masters champions Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal, as well as her golf idols Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm.
Technically, two Australians will tee up at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship next week although only one under our national flag – Sarah Hammett and Malaysia’s Jeneath Wong.
Having been part of the Australia team in last year’s WAAP, Hammett is no stranger to the prestigious event, but with no Australian having triumphed since its inception in 2018, the pressure is evident.
The final day was all about Korea, with Oh, Hyosong Lee, and Shihyun Kim combining for an incredible 11-under-par last round to seal an impressive victory.
Sarah Hammett and Abbie Teasdale are two of the brightest prospects in Australia’s amateur ranks. Here, they outline their ambitions for the future.Â
For the first time since Jo Mills defeated Sarah Kemp at the fifth extra hole in the inaugural Women’s NSW Open in 2006, the tournament went into extra time, but not before a wild chain of events that saw the lead change hands numerous times on the back nine.
Three members of the Australian contingent – Justice Bosio, Caitlin Peirce and Sarah Hammett – played in the 2022 championship. They will be joined by debutantes Keeley Marx, Abbie Teasdale and Jazy Roberts in a fresh-faced Aussie team.
