Next week’s PGA Tour stop, the WM Phoenix Open, is often referred to as “The Greatest Show on Grass”. However, there will be a pretty entertaining show among a different set of golfers on the Monday of the tournament.
On Sunday, the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is where fortunes are decided for the contenders at the Players Championship. On Wednesday, however, it’s also where their caddies hit their most important (read: only?) shot of the year.
It’s the first caddie recovery zone organised this PGA Tour season, but is a perk that is growing increasingly common on tour – with more planned in the coming months.
It was a tense exchange, with both caddies listening intently as Johnson insisted that the putt was so short, it never crossed his mind that it wouldn’t be conceded.
When the PGA of America announced on Wednesday that it would allow distance-measuring devices in its Major championships, including at this year’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, one of the main tenets of the decision was that it would help speed up play.
