Scottie Scheffler is a pretty mild-mannered fella, so it came as a shock to the sports world when we woke up on the morning of May 17th, 2024, to find a mugshot of the World No. 1 plastered across the Internet.
As fans soon came to learn, Scheffler was arrested trying to enter Valhalla Golf Club via a closed entrance following a tragic traffic accident earlier that morning. In the dark, rainy chaos, there was a misunderstanding and Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested for allegedly dragging Louisville Police detective Bryan Gillis beside his vehicle. Scheffler was released for his second-round tee time and the charges were eventually dropped, but the image of him in his orange prison jumpsuit was burned into our brains forever.
A year later, Scheffler has returned to the PGA Championship, and while things have gone A LOT smoother for the reigning FedEx Cup champ so far, some fans noticed something very interesting on Wednesday at Quail Hollow. Check it out.

On one hand, Scheffler is a University of Texas alum, and that hue looks a touch more burnt than it does correctional. On the other, the timing is too coincidental to ignore. As Golf’s Claire Rogers points out, Scheffler has been scripted in orange precisely twice in the past 12 months. Once by Nike on Wednesday, and once by the Louisville Police Department.

Only Scheffler can say whether this is subtle shade or simply a sartorial horns-up, but until we hear otherwise, we choose to believe.
