FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The most stunning moment from the 2023 Ryder Cup was World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and five-time major champ Brooks Koepka suffering the worst loss in the event’s history, a 9-and-7 drubbing at the hands of Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg during a Saturday foursomes match. Even more stunning might be what the European duo was talking about on the course.

OK, so maybe not in the heat of battle, but Aberg shared what the wackiest thing his fellow Scandinavian likes to gab about. And it’s pretty darn wacky.

“He’s always into sort of the UFO deals and all those things, so it’s quite interesting,” Aberg told reporters at Bethpage Black ahead of this week’s Ryder Cup. “I’m not quite down that road just yet. If I hang out with him long enough, I might be.”

OK then . . .

“Again, you never really know where it’s going to go,” Aberg added. “Which is quite interesting.”

Interesting, indeed. Actually, we already knew this about Viktor. In a 2024 interview with The Telegraph he said, “It’s like, what is the deal with all the aliens? There seem to be some pilots and commanders that explain what they saw and have video footage of it, so it’s like, ‘Huh, what is that?’ I find the reluctance to talk about that stuff fascinating.”

“What’s the deal with aliens?” sounds like a great opener to a standup act. Anyway, even if Hovland hasn’t converted Aberg into believing about UFOs (yet), they still will make a formidable pair once again this week if Luke Donald opts to go that route. And why wouldn’t he?

“We’re good friends. We speak the same language. We come from a very similar background,” Aberg said of Hovland. “Obviously he grew up in Norway, and Sweden are very close in terms of the cultural environment. And yeah, we get along. . . . We had a good time in Rome, and we’ve played multiple practice rounds since, and our caddies get along great, too. He’s a good friend to have on Tour and in the team room here.”

And if you’re interested in chatting about UFOs and aliens, he’s definitely your guy.
