TGL might have its first real rivalry in Rory McIlroy vs. New York Golf Club. Well, New York Golf Club’s social media team, that is.

McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf squared off with New York on Monday night in what was an entertaining—and important—match that determined the four teams making the new leauge’s inaugural playoffs. But it was a tweet from earlier in the contest that really caught Golf Twitter’s attention.

McIlroy missed a short par putt on the opening hole that gave New York a 1-0 lead. And the team’s official handle not only rushed to social media to share the clip, but added the following zinger: “Didn’t know we were playing Pinehurst…”

Damn. (Simulator) shots fired.

The caption, of course, referenced Rory’s two short misses at Pinehurst, where the four-time major champ lost the U.S. Open by a stroke to Bryson DeChambeau. As if the poor guy doesn’t have to hear about that enough. But while those happened late in the tournament, this happened early on the first hole. So it seems like whoever fired that one off had it in the holster coming into the match.

I mean, we’re not going to dub New York-Boston the Yankees-Red Sox of TGL just yet (although Derek Jeter and David Ortiz were at the SoFi Center on Monday night), but that’s cold. Especially considering McIlroy, along with Tiger Woods and Mike McCarley, is one of the founders of the new tech-infused golf league.

But New York’s social team didn’t rub it in after winning 10-6 to move onto the playoffs and end Boston’s season.

A “Hit the road, Rory!” would have really spiced things up.
