The FedEx Cup Playoffs start in two weeks, which means we’re set for a lot of jostling around the top-70 bubble at the Rocket Classic and next week’s Wyndham Championship. First, the PGA Tour heads to Detroit Golf Club after a recent $16-million renovation. Unfortunately, this will be the eighth and final iteration of this event here, as Rocket declined to pick up its option for 2027.
Defending champ Aldrich Potgieter will tee off, as will World No. 3 Cameron Young and last week’s first-time PGA Tour winner Jackson Koivun. The 21-year-old is coming off a three-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler at the 3M Open, and is now exactly at No. 70, the last entry into the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He’ll have two weeks to hold off big names such as Jason Day and Keegan Bradley, not far behind him.

Donald Ross designed two 18-hole courses at Detroit Golf Club on a tight plot of land in the middle of the city. An extensive renovation project was completed by Bruce Hepner in 2015 to restore the greens and bunkers. Immediately following the 2025 Rocket Classic, the club embarked on another massive renovation, for a reported $16 million, led by Tyler Rae’s team to lean into bringing back strategic elements of Ross’ design. Most holes are framed by trees and are mostly up and back on flat land, though subtle rumbles in the land provide enough movement to offer strategic value and demanding shotmaking into these Ross greens, which average 5,150 square feet. The results of Rae’s work will be seen on the North course when it reopens ahead of the 2026 Rocket Classic, and the South course will come next. View Course
Other critical names in the field this week include Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Wyndham Clark, Chris Gotterup, Si Woo Kim, Akshay Bhatia, Jacob Bridgeman, Russell Henley, J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele. This will be the tournament debut for major champs Spieth and Koepka.
Only 20 at the time, Potgieter won last year’s Rocket Classic in a playoff over Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk. Potgieter nailed a 17-foot birdie on the par-3 15th, the fifth extra hole, to hold off Greyserman and win his first PGA Tour event. After shooting a course-record 11-under 61 on Friday, Jake Knapp ended up rounding out the top five, along with Michael Thorbjornsen.
This week’s winner will receive a $1.8 million cut of the $10 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points.
