Drop the “Mortgage.” It’s cleaner.
No matter what we’re calling it, the Rocket Classic is back this week, returning once again to Detroit Golf Club, its home since the event’s debut in 2019. As in years past, it’s one of the last PGA Tour tournaments before the final major of the season and an opportunity to grab some late FedEx Cup and Ryder Cup points to play your way into the Playoffs/Tour Championship or on to a team competing at Bethpage in September.
Cam Davis will return to defend his title, which came with a little help when Ashkay Bhatia missed a four-foot putt for par on the 72nd hole. It was Davis’ second win on tour; his first was in 2021 at this event, as well. He’ll be joined by Travelers champ (and potential playing captain?) Keegan Bradley, World No. 5 Collin Morikawa and Ben Griffin, a two-time winner this season. Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Min Woo Lee, Hideki Matsuyama and Patrick Cantlay are also set to tee it up in Detroit.

Donald Ross designed two 18-hole courses at Detroit Golf Club on a tight plot of land in the middle of the city. An extensive renovation project was completed by Bruce Hepner in 2015 to restore the greens and bunkers. Most holes are framed by trees and are mostly up and back on flat land, though subtle rumbles in the land provide enough movement to offer strategic value and demanding shotmaking into these Ross greens, which average 5,150 square feet. There have been two playoffs in the last four Rocket Classics, Davis winning one in 2021 and Fowler prevailing in 2023. Davis is the only golfer who has won this event (at least) twice, and he’ll have a great chance to take home his third title at Detroit Golf Club this week.
This week’s winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.728 million cut of the $9.6 million purse.
