After winning the 2021 PGA Championship, Phil Mickelson gave Xander Schauffele a lot of credit for hitting him where it hurt the most: in his wallet. Now the six-time Major champ is preparing for a different type of jab from the new Olympic champ.

In case you don’t know the story, Mickelson says he found extra motivation during last year’s lockdown after being routinely beaten by Schauffele. In one memorable match, Mickelson pressed and Schauffele responded by making a hole-in-one to take even more money out of his pocket. Talk about a dagger.

Now Phil is expecting Xander to take something out of his own pocket the next time they play – because it’s exactly what he would do to needle his opponent, if he could.

Probably smart to get out ahead of that one. Seems like a pretty obvious move. In fact, Justin Rose broke out his gold medal to mark a putt in a PGA Tour event. Pretty ballsy. Anyway, here was Schauffele’s reply:

Of course, Mickelson still leads 6-nil when it comes to Majors. So he’s got some pretty impressive hardware of his own, including that Wanamaker Trophy he claimed in May…

Did you really think he was going to pass up an opportunity to mention that? Shame on you.
