Scottie Scheffler has been on the major-winning press tour for some time now. He popped up on Jimmy Fallon flexing the Claret Jug and even walked the green carpet at the “Happy Gilmore 2” premiere. And yet, with all that time on camera in front of mics, no intrepid journalist asked the question everyone has been thinking: Were you the one who farted on No. 17 at Royal Portrush?

There’s some incriminating evidence, and by incriminating evidence, we mean a live broadcast turned into viral content of someone(?) letting one rip at the Open Championship on Thursday. There was no definitive proof that it was Scheffler, but the announcers couldn’t help but make some jokes and snicker at the (admittedly very funny) audio.

“What are you laughing about? Let’s stick to the golf.” And then the masterful, “A little bit of wind from behind.”

There was a good chance it was the World No. 1, but it also could’ve been a caddie, a fan in the vicinity or even a cameraman turning an early-in-the-week shot into internet gold. Luckily, Big Cat and PFT Commenter followed up on “Pardon My Take.”

“Yeah, that was me. Oh, yeah. It was me,” Scheffler admits after being asked the “very important question.” “You’re out there for like six hours. You’re eating some different food over there. Some stuff’s gonna happen. You never know when the boom mics there. You never know what they’re gonna pick up.

“I’m definitely surprised it hasn’t happened more in the past, picking up stuff like that. I literally didn’t think anything about it, then after we got inside, Xander [Schauffele] was showing me the video. He pulls up the video, and I see myself standing on 17 and I’m like, ‘Oh, I know what this is.’”

When asked to grade his fart—I can’t believe I went to journalism school for this—the world No. 1 seemed more than pleased with how it all went down: “It was good. It got a nice sound to it. We were outside. It was perfect.”
