Deniliquin and Wentworth Golf Clubs share the early lead in the 25th staging of the Holden Scramble Championship Final at Twin Waters Golf Club on the Sunshine Coast, after opening rounds of 21 under par.

Following a memorable arrival and opening night of the Championship Final, the focus shifted to the golf course for round one of the 54-hole tournament. Both clubs have previously been represented at the Championship Final with Deniliquin’s last visit being in 2012 and Wentworth Golf Club last winning through back in 2005.

Wentworth Head PGA Professional Todd Brakenridge is really happy with their start though acknowledges that there is a long way to go.

“Our team are really excited just to be here at the Championship Final though to be leading is something else” said Brakenridge.

“Given the limited amount of rain I understand Queensland has received over recent months, we expected the course to be a little dry, though to be truthful the course is in about as good a shape as we have ever played.”

For Deniliquin Golf Club it was an intense round with the elimination format really putting the pressure on the team in the closing holes.

“We were relying on one of our players to get the last of their 3 drives away on the final hole, and when she found the middle of the fairway, we knew we had take advantage of it by making birdie to secure the overnight lead” said PGA Professional Rodney Booth.

Just behind the leaders is Gayndah Golf Club only 0.2 of a shot adrift with Grafton Golf Club also less than two shots behind Deniliquin and Wentworth.

In the Women’s Final, South Australia’s – Balaklava Golf Club will lead heading into the second round after opening with a round of 54.8. Just behind them is the team from Ocean Shores Country Club in Northern NSW who are placed less than a shot behind. All six Women’s Final teams are within six shots of each other making for an exciting finish over the final two rounds.

It will all be on the line tomorrow with the leading 12 mixed teams and leading three Women’s teams after the first two rounds being joined on Monday by tournament professionals Lincoln Tighe, Daniel Popovic, Ashley Hall, Jordan Zunic along with grace the fairway for one hole with Australian Olympian, Marcus Fraser.
