On the heels of the Travelers Championship announcing it will be a Championship Series event in 2028, the PGA Tour dropped news Tuesday that Sompo will sponsor an event in 2027 at Silverado Resort in California, before transitioning to a Championship Series event at another course in 2028.
Sources tell Golf Digest that the host course is likely to be in the Seattle area in 2028. Sahalee Country Club is the leader in the clubhouse. Sompo is a global insurance and reinsurance company that originated in Japan.
The new deal is billed as a multi-year partnership and the full-field event next year will be July 29-Aug. 1 on the resort’s North Course in Napa. There is not an event at Silverado this fall as there was in 2025, when World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was victorious in his last start before heading to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
“Just a few weeks after we announced our new competitive model, we are delighted to welcome Sompo as the first new sponsor supporting the PGA Tour Championship Series that will launch in 2028,” said Dhruv Prasad, PGA Tour chief commercial officer. “We look forward to debuting this partnership in Napa in 2027 and are excited to announce its future home in a new market for the PGA Tour in the coming months.”
PGA Tour commissioner Brian Rolapp announced last month that the Championship Series in 2028 will feature 23-24 events, including the Players, majors, postseason and Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup. It will begin in February and end in August.
Only the Travelers and Sompo have been announced. The 2027 Sompo event will be on CBS and Golf Channel.
