IN A nod to her debut on the cover of Australian Golf Digest in April, Minjee Lee has overtaken Karrie Webb as Australia’s top-ranked female golfer.
Making the transition from ‘The Next One’ to ‘The One’, the LPA Tour rookie from Perth ended seven-times Major winner Webb’s 20-year reign over Australian women’s golf.
Lee’s sixth-place finish in the Arkansas Championship ensured she surpassed the 40-year-old Webb in the official world rankings released overnight, with the 19-year-old moving from 17th to 16th on the list. Ironically, Webb – Lee’s long-time mentor – is now 18th after starting the week at 16.
The milestone comes just months after her maiden victory on the LPGA Tour in May at the Kingsmill Championship.
Webb, however – a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and arguably greatest golfer Australia has ever seen – is fiercely competitive and will use this as motivation to return to Aussie top dog status.
