Maybe Rory McIlroy did want to go to the Olympics after all? Just not for golf. For hammer throw. Or potentially, a new hybrid sport: golf club throw.

A little more than a year after throwing his 3-iron into the water at Doral, McIlroy was going for the par-5 16th in two at Royal Troon in the third round of the 145th Open Championship.

The Northern Irishman hung his 3-wood out to the right – and then he flung it at the ground in disgust. The club never had a chance, immediately snapping upon meeting the turf. Check it out:

It’s also not the first time we’ve seen Rory lose his cool with his equipment. At last year’s WGC-Cadillac Championship, McIlroy tossed his 3-iron into a lake at Doral after a bad shot. However, that club, which was eventually fished out and returned to Rory, had it easy with a splash landing.
