There are club drops and there are shanks. While conventional wisdom suggests the two should go hand in hand, that’s not always the case (see: Hideki Matsuyama).
On the rare occasion the two do cross paths, however, they make for one of the most powerful forces in golf. Just ask Justin Rose, who found himself on the wrong end of this cosmic phenomenon during his first round at the Valero Texas Open on Thursday. Watch it and weep.

“My gosh—WHAT WAS THAT??” the broadcast asked as Rose’s shot soared straight into the Texas underbrush at precisely the same moment his club struck the fairway with a telltale thud. We imagine the 2013 U.S. Open champ was asking himself a very similar question after a 281-yard tee shot left him in the smack dab in the middle of TPC San Antonio’s fourth fairway.

Unfortunately, the all-out eject cost Rose, who went on to double bogey the 483-yard par-4. But them’s the breaks when you play this game as long as Rose has, and something tells us he won’t lose too much sleep over it.
