It should be way, way too early to dub anything the “____ of the year”. After what happened at the par-5 ninth hole today at Kapalua, though, J.T. Poston might disagree.

That’s because what happened to Poston can only be described as the unluckiest break of 2024, a year we are only eight days into. But we’re confident in that label, and confident you will be to once you see the clip below. Here’s Poston pitching his third to the ninth green and one-hopping it into the bottom of the cup for what he thought was an eagle:

Pain. Even Poston couldn’t believe it, pointing down to the ground and asking his playing partner if he just saw what we all just saw. Yep, that thing was all the way down and then it wasn’t, mate. Brutal.

As Kevin Kisner explained on the TV broadcast, there was a preposterous amount of spin on that golf ball for it to have literally gone in the hole and somehow spun out of it. Can only imagine how much it would have spun back had it not gone in the hole first.

Poston went on to clean up his birdie putt and has since added another birdie at the 11th hole to reach 20-under. Winning the tournament is a longshot, as Poston is currently five shots behind. But with the amount of money at stake this week, it’ll be interesting to see just how much this bounce out ends up costing him.
