We’re as bullish on Jon Rahm as anyone, and why not? It’s taken the young Spaniard less than two years as a pro to crack the top-five of the Official World Golf Ranking. But the people running the OHL Classic at Mayakoba seem to be reaching just a bit with this plaque at El Camaleon Golf Club this week.

As you can see, the spot isn’t where Rahm won or even pulled off a spectacular shot, but rather where he hit his first official shot on the US PGA Tour. While he was still an amateur. In an event he wound up missing the cut. Just three years ago. Not exactly a must-commemorate historic occasion.
At least, not yet. If Rahm goes on to have a Hall of Fame career that many are projecting for him, then sure, the OHL Classic should be proud of being the place where it all started thanks to a sponsor’s invite in 2014 (still an amateur, Rahm came back in 2015 and finished T-10). But for now, Rahm remains a 22-year-old golfer with two professional titles. Let’s pump the brakes a little.
