There’s one word that you’re not supposed to say while talking golf. Just one! Not only did Jim Nantz say it about his “pal” Tony Romo, but he also said it on national TV during a Sunday NFL broadcast in front of a primetime audience seconds before Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson threw a touchdown strike. That’s as cruel as it gets.
After a botched snap by Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum, Nantz found a perfect time to bring up Romo’s apparent chipping issues. You can hear him get set to strike: Nantz’s “Looks like your …” gets cut off the first time, but he brings it back. No matter what happened in the game, Nantz was going to make sure he got a dig in at Romo’s golf game.

“Looks like your chipping motion these days, big guy,” Nantz says with a hearty laugh. To this Romo promptly replies, “Oh, God. I’ve already heard enough of that. But it’s true actually! Wish I could tell you it’s not.”
And then the final dagger from Nantz, “The old yips!”
The fact that Romo mentions that he’s “already heard enough of that” means that this is far from the first time Nantz has kicked him while he’s down. The former Cowboys QB takes it all in stride, but perhaps there’s a bit of pain there masked by the usual Romo boyish enthusiasm?
The two joined forces at CBS back in 2017, so there’s a concrete friendship there buoyed by a mutual love of golf, and yet that one’s gotta hurt a little. It goes to show you that no one’s better at trash-talking you than your friends and golf partners.
We just hope Romo figures out whatever’s ailing him in time for next year’s American Century Championship. He’s already won the South Lake Tahoe event three times, but it’s going to be quite difficult if he’s got the chipping yips. To make matters worse, we already know that Nantz will be there with a well-timed barb if the poor play continues. Best of luck to you, Tony Romo.
